New Year’s Day 2010

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Well, it happened… I missed it. The clock swung swiftly, silently, past the midnight hour, and where was I? Some deep crevice in the soft, pink, tissue of my brain, fast asleep, probably dreaming in the night’s first REM sleep.

Alas, the alarm I’d set upon making the decision to “rest my eyes” for a bit, failed to go off. Or, perhaps, it did go off for a while, and I processed it as an air raid siren or a video game? Who knows? But, next thing I did know was the clock read 1:14 AM (or some such).

So, I “celebrated” on Mountain time this year, which just meant watching replays of the already toasted public gatherings and fireworks and ball droppings. Speaking of which, anyone know if they reached the anticipated million people mark in New York’s Times Square?

As for New Year’s Day itself, I was much more prepared, if still a little tired, as I set out for Mom’s. Inspired by the Kashi-black bean mix of Christmas, I opted for a more loaf like consistency by swapping in split peas instead of beans. The peas melted into a smooth, cohesive and flavorful filling for the gaps between the chewy grains, and it all firmed up beautifully in the fridge.

We spent a relaxing and carefree day, chatting, putting together a bit of assemble-it-yourself furniture, and playing pool with my step-dad. Lunch was skipped and dinner pushed up to 3:30′ish.

While the main course of the day’s traditional German meal is off limits, Mom kept some sauerkraut and potatoes out of the crockpot for me, and, naturally, the peas — representing wealth in the coming year — were never destined for the slow cooker. (Add to them, all the split peas in my loaf, and it should be a good year, right? ;) )

Was quitting smoking one of your New Year’s resolutions? Have you tried hypnosis?

Vegan Thanksgiving: Bachelor Style

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Rather a laid-back day today. I woke up, watched some of the World Chess Cup tiebreakers live on the internet, and did grocery shopping, all before breakfast (more like brunch). Spent more than I wanted, but got a great deal on a 1/2 peck bag of absolutely mammoth Macoun apples at only $0.59/lb!

Not long after brunch (a banana with almond butter), I baked an organic acorn squash — half for lunch and half for dinner, which I just finished — followed quickly by cranking up the oven temp to roast four halved brussels sprouts with onions and garlic. A liberal smear of tomato paste, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, and a healthy shake of cinnamon (and cumin) on the squash, and I was good to go:

After snapping this pic, I also sprinkled a nice layer of nutritional yeast over the brussels sprouts and served it all up (or washed it down) with a vegan-friendly Sam Adams Winter Lager.

Dessert, you ask? One of those honkin’ apples, of course! :)

I hope your day was just as delicious and relaxing, whether with family and friends, or bachelor-style, like mine.

Quick Vegan Stir Fry

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Whipped this up for lunch and just had to share!

  • 7 oz mung bean sprouts

  • 3.5 oz chopped broccoli
  • 1/2 small red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 carrot, sliced
  • 1 honking (14 oz) tomato
  • 2 Thai peppers
  • 1 Tb balsamic vinegar
  • dash of Chinese 5 spice
  • sprinkle of brewer’s yeast

After rinsing the sprouts, they start out with a fair amount of water, so I start those on medium to let some evaporate. Then, I add all the other chopped and/or diced ingredients and turn it up to high for a couple minutes to get the sprouts brown and the rest steamed. Splash some balsamic vinegar toward the end and sprinkle with the Chinese 5-spice and brewer’s yeast for a cheesy flavor (near as I recall it), and ENJOY! :)

Shop Vegan Raw – Grand Opening

Monday, March 16th, 2009

I’m too excited (and impatient?) to wait any longer. I’ve been working on getting this up and running behind-the-scenes for a couple months now. And, I’m finally ready to reveal it.

ShopVeganRaw is now open for business! Woohoo! :)

I still have hundreds of product descriptions to fill in, so if you have any questions, drop me a line, and I’ll be sure to get to those first. As far as functionality is concerned though, the software and I are ready and at your service.

Here’s a little secret for my blog readers: As of this announcement, in addition to missing descriptions, many of the items have yet to be assigned weights. That means, if you order those before I correct it, you can save on shipping.
