The Starch Solution

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Dr. Fuhrman gets a lot of mention on this blog because, well, his focus on veggies, particularly of the green leafy variety, and legumes (yeah, baby!) is in line with mine.

That said, sometimes, especially around the holidays or when short on funds, one can find themselves becoming a bit of a carbaholic. Shhh…

During times like these, it’s nice to give Dr. McDougall a little more play, because obviously we’re not talking about white flour and sugar here, rather whole grains and potatoes, and he defends them vociferously.

Consider this post as therapy. ;)

Bill Clinton Goes Vegan – Kinda

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

First it was Mike Tyson, now (ex-)President and former fast food junkie Bill Clinton has also adopted a plant-based diet.

He says he was motivated by his daughter Chelsea’s wedding (incidentally, already a vegan for some time), his desire to stay healthy to be around for future grandchildren, and recurring blockages following his stent surgery.

The “kinda” in the title is because he does mention eating fish on occasion, so if we had to choose a label, I guess it’d be pescatarian. But, plant-based is always a safe bet.

Anyway, let’s hope he sticks with it as thoroughly as has Tyson. And, if he needs more reasons he should keep going with his “experiment”, this article‘s top 10 gave me a chuckle. ;)

Bill Clinton credits the following individuals for educating and inspiring him to eat a healthy, plant-based diet.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Dean Ornish,
and T. Colin Campbell’s China Study

Dr. Andrew Weil

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

It’s probably fair to say, if you’re at all interested in health and wellness, you’ve heard of Dr. Andrew Weil, a recognized leader in the field of integrative medicine. He’s written many popular books, including Spontaneous Healing and Eight Weeks To Optimum Health.

What you may be less familiar with, however, is his past studies and writings on the nature of consciousness and man’s long history of use of various entheogenic substances as a means to alter it. A new book entitled The Harvard Psychedelic Club describes Dr. Weil’s own use and simultaneous opposition to Timothy Leary’s brand of mass advocacy.

In 1995, “Mycologists Dr. Gustan Guzman, Fidel Tapia, and Paul Stamets honored Weil by naming a newly discovered mushroom Psilocybe weilii” (-Wikipedia and mentioned in the Q&A period of the below talk.)

While he may not be as involved as he used to be, it’s clear from his talk in San Jose, California this April, he is pleased with some recent advances, still as open as in his earlier writings, and restrained as ever in plotting the way forward.

Biosphere 2

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Two years and 20 minutes, that’s how long Jane Poynter spent in Biosphere 2 alongside Calorie Restriction (CRON) pioneer, Roy Walford and six others from 1991 to 1993.

Here’s her story as recounted at the recent TEDx event in California, the first of the new independently-run TED Talk offshoot seminars.

I hope you enjoy this bit of environmental and dietary history.
