The Leading Causes of Death

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

While I already shared this video on the Vegan Done Light Facebook page last month, I felt it was really important and informative, so I’m posting it here too.

I encourage you to block out 55 minutes to watch this fast-paced and often humorous presentation from Michael Greger, M.D.. In it, he discusses the leading causes of death and how almost all of them can be mitigated to some degree or another by sticking to a plant-based diet.

From the video description:

Death in America is largely a foodborne illness. Focusing on studies published just over the last year in peer-reviewed scientific medical journals, Michael Greger, M.D., offers practical advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent, treat, and even reverse many of the top 15 killers in the United States.

Please share this vital information with your friends and family. Available on DVD.

Fountain of Youth?

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

A friend of mine sent me a link to this video, which we both immediately agreed I should post on the blog. It’s an amazing anecdote in favor of a raw food vegan diet. She looks great… and the food does too. :)

We both remarked on how odd it was hubby never joined her (or maybe sad is the more appropriate adjective) and further that he still continues to hold out even as she is reaping the rewards. It’s never too late to start feeling better with a healthy, vegan (raw?) diet!

What didn’t surprise me was the typical news story ending with one of the desk jockeys quipping, “full time job prepping all that food.” Seems they always have to give the viewing public that ready excuse for not making a positive change, right? Same thing goes for stories on calorie restriction. Like it’s a major hardship to keep track of what you put into your body.

Life Is Short – Lifespan In Perspective

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I have created an interesting little toy. Depending on your point of view, you’ll either find this morbid or motivating (or both). I call it the “Lifespan Viewer.”

What it does is show — given your age and life expectancy (years total, not remaining) as inputs — how many weeks you’ve lived and approximately how many you may have left. The latter are presented as unfilled boxes, so you could mark them off as the weeks pass since printing it out. It really puts things in perspective and as such serves as the ultimate prioritization tool.

Calorie Restriction on Oprah

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

What an exciting week it’s been for calorie restriction!

You know CR is hitting the mainstream when Oprah Winfrey covers it and resveratrol supplementation on her show. (These two life extension practices are often discussed in the same breath due to potentially similar mechanisms.) To learn more about what she and Dr. Oz had to say, check out this section on her website. I guess several of our CR Society members were featured, but alas, I no longer have cable and so will have to wait for the video archive.

The other highlight was The Immortality Institute’s (ImmInst.org) “Sunday Evening Update” on Ustream. This channel was new to me, but they’re always broadcasting fascinating presentations about biotechnology, etc.. Anyway, this Sunday, the members of the CR Society were invited to join the regulars to listen to a live interview with prominent researcher Dr. Luigi Fontana regarding his thoughts on the human applicability of the animal studies and what future studies have in store. You can watch the replay here.
