Buy Nothing Day

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

My family will not be buying anything on Black Friday. In fact, as last year, we will not be exchanging gifts at Christmas. Without any little ones — indeed, this branch of the family tree appears to stop at me and my sister — it had slowly become obvious there was little sense in swapping things of equal value when none of us really wanted anything anyway.

Let me tell you, it’s much less stressful to just spend time together, sharing conversation, games (billiards with my stepdad, cards and dice with all), good food, and spirits! As it was, in years past, I’d taken to doing my shopping entirely on-line in order to avoid the crowds.

While we’re on the topic, when it came out in 2007, I immediately added What Would Jesus Buy? to my Netflix queue. Well, I finally got around to watching it via their instant streaming option. Quite a funny movie with, of course, a good message against wanton consumerism. It was interesting to see what happens behind-the-scenes of such a large-scale, cross-country protest. (It looked exhausting!)

Want more information on Buy Nothing Day? Check out the Adbusters site. Lots of articles and videos, including this one, which I thought you might enjoy. It’s hard to make out the stats being presented though. Maybe someone could reply with what they caught?

Quoting co-founder of Adbusters Media Foundation, Kalle Lasn,

“A simpler, pared-down lifestyle — one in which we’re not drowning in debt — may well be the answer to this crisis we’re in. Living within our means will also make us happier and healthier than we’ve been in years.”

I say, three cheers for the internet; there is so much it has enabled us to read, view, and do, all without wasteful packaging <Ahem> OK, notwithstanding the massive amounts of technological junk overflowing landfills through a combination of planned obsolescence and Moore’s Law.

Irradiated Lettuce

Friday, October 31st, 2008

As you probably know by now, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially enacted its strategy to “protect” the green leafy food supply, specifically lettuce and spinach, from pathogens via irradiation. You would’ve thought that would be the purview of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Irradiation: A Safe Measure for Safer Iceberg Lettuce and Spinach

Lovely. <sarcasm>

One good thing though, according to that little document, is participation is not a requirement. Companies will get to choose. However, labeling is required.

The symbol for which you should be on the lookout is the international sign for irradiation, known as the radura:

I’ve got a better symbol for you. My Dad created this design. :)

Rawkathon Rocks On

Monday, October 20th, 2008

I hope you got to watch last night’s Rawkathon video interviews. :)

Kevin Gianni reports everything worked splendidly, and the response was great. He said people are already clamoring for the physical DVDs. Who can blame them? The production was slick, with a beautiful intro segment and crystal clear picture. Apparently, they’ve added a payment plan to make it a little less painful.

Anyway, on to the actual content. The first two up to the plate were Mike Adams and Gabriel Cousens, M.D..

These guys look awesome! So vital and healthy. What really impressed me though was Mike’s bravery in unhesitatingly declaring he knew the secret to curing cancer, and then revealing it. Yikes! You’re not supposed to say that kind of them, lest you be persecuted by the FDA. But, he did it anyway.

New York’s Menu: Calories Count

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

A single word comes to mind as I sit to write on this topic: “Vindication!”

When NY first set in motion the legislative process of requiring calorie counts on menus, especially those of fast food establishments, many scoffed, declaring it would make no difference.

Here on the blog, I and others, expressed that its efficacy in changing the diets of others was beside the point. Rather, it’s an issue of our right to information and the attendant decision-making empowerment it engenders.

Well, the good news is, it’s done both! People are aghast at the actual numbers. And who can blame them?! This is why we wanted to know. ;)

Article: MSNBC reports on the shocking numbers.
