BPA Free Canned Foods

Bisphenol A (BPA for short) is an organic compound commonly “used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, along with other applications” (-Wikipedia) including baby bottles!

It has been shown to leach from these plastics into our food and water and has been studied as a potential carcinogenic due to its estrogen mimicking properties. That combined with its widespread use has brought it under fire from consumers. In October, Canada declared BPA a toxic substance.

I don’t eat a lot of food from cans unless I’m traveling, with the exception of tomato products for chilis, etc..

And wouldn’t you know it, tomatoes — due to their increased acidity — are some of the trickiest to can without the plastic liners containing BPA. I’ve looked for similar tomato-based foods in glass jars, but they are few and far between, save for all those really high-sodium pasta sauces.

I suspected they were one of the good guys, but I don’t think they bragged about it enough, leaving that twinge of doubt. So I was really excited to see the new labeling above while grocery shopping this weekend. :)

Also, it turns out the organic Muir Glen line of tomato products will no longer contain BPA. That was announced in April, effective with their next tomato harvest, so aside from any older cans still left on the shelf, we should soon be in the clear there too. Excellent!
