Pig Pals Shelter

I guess it’s fair to say, my little sister and I have a special affinity for pigs. If you read my story in the September issue of Vegan Done Light, you’ll appreciate why. The gist of it is we raised a couple in our young teen years (not our choice) and managed to get a little too attached. Anyway

That’s why, when she sent me a recent email about the Pig Pals shelter in North Carolina, where she lives, I immediately asked if it was OK for me to post about it on the blog. Her reply was a similarly immediate, “Go for it.” A week later (doh!), I’m finally getting to it. Sorry, sis. Hope this helps.

So, here’s the scoop. My sister’s friend at work has a potbellied pig veterinary service on the side and wants to help the Pig Pals miniature pig shelter in NC win a prize in the Animal Rescue Site’s latest contest, open until December 20th. There are even awards for top in state that would go a long way for such a small shelter.

When you think of potbellied pigs, you probably conjure up images of cute, little pets. While that may be true when they’re babies, they can grow to be quite big.

And, that’s when folks tend to either abandon or neglect them or just plain decide they can’t handle the responsibility anymore. This shelter seeks to provide medical care, spaying or neutering, and finding them good homes.

Just search for Pig Pals in NC and come back each day to add another vote until December 20th.
