Date Harvesting

It’s starting to cool off in New Hampshire, and we even have some colors peeking through the green. Other signs of the turning season in this neck of the woods include the pumpkins making their appearance at the farmer’s markets and the corn mazes opening up.

Meanwhile, in different climes, October marks the beginning of date season, at least for my favorite variety, the oh-so-juicy and decadent medjhool date.

While browsing around for the exact dates and putting my name on the notification list for early shipment, I found this video of the harvesting process.

I had no idea it was this dangerous; those are some TALL trees!
On the other hand, I’m sure they don’t all do it quite this way. ;)

Raw Tahini Recall

Just a quick heads up. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a recall notice for immediate release on one of my favorite raw nut butters:

Premier Organics of Berkeley, CA is recalling 840 Cases of Artisana Raw Tahini of Lot 90811, in 16oz glass jars because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious infections.

Heck, if it weren’t for the Six-Week Plan — during which I consumed no nut butters whatsoever — I’d likely have a jar of this in my house right now! So, please do check the lot # on yours and stay safe.

Vegan Kickstart – PCRM 21 Day Challenge

With my own challenge, the Six Week Eat To Live plan essentially complete, I’d like to draw your attention, particularly for those new to the vegan diet and lifestyle, to the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and their 21-Day Vegan Kickstart which begins tomorrow (Sept 08).

For the record, I lost three pounds over the course of the six weeks. Not quite as much as I’d intended, but nevertheless worth the “effort,” as I managed to reset my calorie intake, which had been creeping up, and to return to daily walks on the treadmill (30 minutes at 5 MPH) with the help of the SurfShelf.

Still have to get back to the weights though as it’s been sporadic at best these last few months. My Dad found a pic from a few years ago that should provide some motivation; I had quite the “guns!” I’m thinking I’ll finally reveal myself and put it in this month’s Vegan Done Light newsletter. What do you say? :)

Anyway, I wanted to make this quick post to encourage any new vegetarians and vegans to sign up for the PCRM Kickstart. They’ll be providing daily menus and there’s a forum to ask questions, etc.. Enjoy!
