Coconuts: Good For Something After All

A recent article entitled Zap Fat with Fat? from Eating Well Magazine reminded me I had this cheeky post queued up since January.

At the time, this story about using coconuts for car parts had me declaring, “Finally a good use for coconuts!”

Certainly, its oil, consisting of 90% saturated fat rather seldom makes it into my bloodstream. Actually, I don’t even remember the last time. Probably, as some nefarious under-the-radar ingredient in an ostensibly “healthy” vegan treat.

Sounds interesting, especially the wiki article on coconut oil. I didn’t know there was something called ‘virgin coconut oil’! Thanks.

  2. The only thing from a coconut I use is a little – very little indeed – coconut milk to lightly flavour some curries, and that only once in a long while. I just don’t believe in adding oils to things. At 120 calories a Tbsp of ANY oil, it makes me shudder to think of all the good things I’m having to miss out on in order to make room for those extra calories. Funny how quickly one’s taste buds adjust to not having added fats, and funny how quickly one’s body rebels at the unnaturalness of adding them after doing without them for a while.

Thanks for the article, Erin :)

I actually use coconut oil frequently, but I don’t eat it. Coconut oil melts at body temperature and it works very nicely as a face cream and foot cream. When you apply it to your face it leaves a thin film that keeps your skin from dehydrating. Rubbing coconut oil on your feet leaves them soft. I like to apply coconut oil after a shower when the natural oils of the body have been washed off.

Firstly, did you know that there’s also extra virgin coconut oil? The difference between that and virgin is that EVCO is made from fresh coconuts and VCO is made from coconuts that are cracked and sun dried before pressing the oil.

I learned a LOT about coconut oil when I use an alternative health treatment for heart disease. Instead of having a triple bypass, I participated in a dietary research trial that included a daily quarter cup of EVCO. Within a year of the start of the diet my heart was declared healthy, my arteries had cleared AND I dropped a huge amount of weight (almost 150 lbs).

It really is good stuff! I use it almost as much as I use olive oil now.

One other thing about it… It’s been an essential part of pre-me infant formula for decades because it’s fats are among the closest to what’s in breast milk. Feeding it to pre-me’s has made a huge difference in how well their nervous system develops since one of the fatty acids in coconut oil directly builds the myelin sheathe that’s so important for nerve function.

I’ve had good experiences with virgin coconut oil I think its one of natures greatest miracles.

  6. Hi! I noticed that my website isn’t appearing well just in case you want to read what I think about food being the food buff that I also am. Cheers!
