And The Winner Is…

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Appropriately enough, the atmospheric randomizer chose Tony Z. to receive the one-year subscription to   E – The Environmental Magazine.

Tony’s was among the first batch of recipes when I announced this project last year. He actually submitted a few (don’t worry, I only counted him once for the drawing).

Some classic Mexican dishes. Which just goes to show you can practice Calorie Restriction without giving up your favorites.

Want to see them? We’re going to need more contributors or it won’t happen. Remember, a copy of the resulting collection is on the house, if I pick your recipe to appear within.

Contest Ends Sunday

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Just wanted to remind everyone about the drawing this Sunday for a year’s subscription to E – The Environmental Magazine!

Here’s how to enter.

And, don’t worry if you miss it, there’s still a very good reason to contribute — a free copy of the finished work. :)

Raw Food is Bizarre Food

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Well, at least according to the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods it is. ;)

So, mark your calendars and set your VCRs or TiVos (am I the only one still using the former?) and watch Andrew Zimmern “brave” raw food.

This Tuesday, October 14th (incidentally, also the first day of the World Chess Championship!), raw food chef and author Ani Phyo will be featured in a segment of the Los Angeles episode.

But, consider yourself forewarned: The rest of the show promises to be much less appetizing!
Seriously.

UNH: My alma mater goes trayless

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

My alma mater, the University of New Hampshire has recently taken the step of removing trays from one of the dining halls. Why would they want to do that you ask?

Well, it turns out it takes quite a bit of water to clean each of those trays. And they also encourage food waste in accordance with the adage about one’s eyes being bigger than their stomach.

The story in The New Hampshire, the University’s student-run paper, gives some impressive numbers in this regard. However, as you can tell from the comments, it’s not exactly a popular measure.

The seacoast’s local print news, Foster’s Daily Democrat, also reported on the story. They predict the trend will catch on at other institutions of higher education.

I was rejoicing the move, but reading the student’s comments — one from a fellow vegan — reminded me what it was like. So, what do you think? Good idea or not worth the inconvenience?

Raw Success

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Following on the heels of Angela Stokes‘ story comes this Mail Tribune article about Clent Manich.

Losing almost 200 pounds, overcoming type-2 diabetes and enjoying the best health of his life are the only reasons Manich needs to continue on a raw-food diet that includes copious quantities of “green smoothies.”

I’m inclined to attribute more of his weight loss to the removal from his diet of all the awful food he was eating than to going raw. On the other hand, he maintains that following a rough three weeks, it was all the healthy food that kept him off the junk. We’re in agreement there…

It’s funny how often people think I’m depriving myself by rejecting a slice of chocolate cake or something. But, I just don’t have the taste for it anymore. I’d much rather a chunk of super dark cacao or a banana or any number of nature’s bounty. ;)

Speaking of raw success stories, if you have one you’d like to share, consider adding your voice to Gazpacho For The Soul.
