Dates: Nature’s Caramels

The date season is upon us, and the harvest is bountiful and ripe. Nature’s healthy caramel! :)

You may recall my introduction to fresh dates earlier this year, when I placed a large order of a few varieties to experience their delicious differences. I quickly finished off the medjhools (my favorites), but still have some deglet noor and halawi in the freezer.

That didn’t stop me from jumping on the new crop though, this time closer to picking. I got a couple two pound boxes of medjhools and a box of tarbazal, which I’d not yet tried.

They’re a little smaller than the giant medjhool and a touch less sweet, but just as moist and definitely larger and softer than the deglet noor and halawi. Very good.

As before, I went with the organic offerings from Pato’s Dream Date Garden, a family farm in California. They pride themselves on their hands-off approach. They don’t even wash them before shipping and suggest you rinse off the “desert dust.” ;)

i just put in an order… (i am afraid i went a bit overboard). how long did it take to arrive?

LOL. That’s easy to do. I ordered mine on Halloween (a Wednesday). They were shipped by Friday. And, much to my surprise, they arrived on Saturday! I should have mentioned, if you’re ordering the 2 lb boxes, that it’s best to do it in multiples of two, since the flat-rate mailer fits a pair and you might as well fill it up. I learned my lesson on that one. I definitely would have selected a fourth box, if I’d known.

Medjhools are my absolute favorite, but I cannot even keep them in my apt–I can never eat just a few, and I am sure I would polish off a box in a day!! You must have incredible self-control…

I’ve been allowing myself 2 Medjhools and 1 Tarbazal a day. My nutrition software tells me they’re 23 calories each, but these big guys have to be more than that! So, I guess that’s how I do it, by plugging my numbers in each morning and trying to stick with the plan. And I know, while they’re in the house, I’m probably fudging it a little in order to make sure I get in my three. That seems a minimum to me. :)

  5. I’d never been a fan of dates before my move to Israel, but now I love them. The fancier grocery stores here pit them, and stuff a walnut in each one. They are just addictive!

Erin, I came across your blog via Lynn Terry’s webinar last night; it’s a pleasure to “meet” you, so to speak.

Hi, Tuppy! Nice to meet you as well. Thanks for stopping by.
