Fall In New England

“A beautiful autumn day spent outside with Mom.
What more could you ask?”

That’s how I signed the guestbook under the big maple tree, after Mom and I had just completed this corn maze on Saturday. And it was so true!

Coyote Howling at the Moon (www.nhcornmaze.com)

We had a great time on our little hike (it’s not as flat as it looks from the air). The weather was surpisingly nice given that we’d just had drenching rains the night before. We thought we would be trudging through muddy fields, but not at all. The maze was very well-maintained, with unpicked, hard as a rock, corn still on the stalks. Throughout there were mailboxes with questions regarding coyotes, the seasons, and other wildlife. Very interesting, educational, and fun.

Once done, we headed back to the barns to look at the huge selection of pumpkins and their preparations for the nighttime haunted hay rides. I ended up taking home a few “Naked Seed” Pumpkins, which are smaller and said to be perfect for eating and roasting the seeds. I also grabbed an aptly-named carnival squash.

I had intended to make us a picnic lunch or at least some raw pumpkin cookies for the day, but we had got to talking on the phone too long the previous evening, and I didn’t have time. So, next stop was the local vegan cafe, Susty’s, along our route back.

Mom got a tofu fajita with a slightly sweet sauce she’ll be raving about for some time. For me, a simple tofu scramble with a side of toasted mixed grain bread. (I think I paid for my gluten cheat with a headache on Sunday, but it was good going down and a rare slip.) We both left comfortably full, opting to forgo dessert (and they have some really tasty options; in fact, I’ve gone just for the desserts before.)

Ah, fall in New England! :)

    Hey Erin,

I have stopped by in a while. This is a great post. Susty’s is on my list of places to visit and the corn maze sounds like loads of fun. That might be a weekend day trip for us.

Hope all is well with you.
