A New Fruit

Not new to nature’s cornucopia, of course, but new to me. I had previously spied this odd looking fruit, but it took the end of papaya and mango season and a sale to nudge me into trying the next exotic specimen.

So, what is it? None other than the potassium-packed, polyphenol-powered, prickly pear! Say that five times fast. :)

aka, cactus fruit

Pretty, right? Well, get ready then; the inside paints a rather different picture, one more befitting the spirit of this “frightful” month. Shield the children’s eyes, this one is gory! ;)

Mmmmm…

Actually, it was pretty good. It reminded me of a cross between a kiwi and raspberries, in texture, and I don’t know what in flavor. It wasn’t very sweet or all that intense either. Indeed, I left off the cinammon I often shake on my fruit, because it likely would have masked it too much.

A word of caution: Even though I picked up an Andy Boy, with their claim of no slivers, I still managed to get one while washing it.

By the way, did you know you can tell this is conventionally-grown, non-GMO produce just by the code on the sticker? It’s true. Check out this video over at sprig.com to learn how.

p.s. – Speaking of Halloween, if you’re planning on handing out chocolate goodies, please be sure to buy FairTrade. This way you know you’re not contributing to the deplorable working conditions and environmental destruction of the big name brands.
