Happy 4th

To my U.S. readers, here’s wishing you a safe and happy 4th Of July. :)

I ask you, what’s stranger than a vegan (yeah, that’d be me) watching the annual spectacle that is Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest live on ESPN?

How about a “vegetarian” competing in it? With folks like Bob Shoudt calling himself one, is it any wonder restaurants are confused by the definition (let alone the more difficult concept of veganism)? Or that one of the first questions we often get asked when others learn of our lifestyle is, “Do you eat chicken or fish?” Thanks, Bob.

By the way, for the other weirdos out there who can actually stomach it without a “reversal of fortune,” Joey Chestnut set a new world record and brought the Mustard Belt back to America, dethroning six-time champ Kobayashi, by downing 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes!

Crunching the numbers, that’s 20394 calories, 45144 grams of sodium, 2336 mg of cholesterol, and 1327 grams of fat, 515 of which are saturated!
And I’m not even sure that includes the buns.

Yikes, I don’t even want to think about what th ebody would do with that much sodium.

I recently registered for an event where I was pleased to see a drop down menu of dietary options. Less pleased to see that I almost ticked “Vegetarian” before I saw, further down the list, “Vegetarian (no fish)”! I may be a few years out from my last biology class, but it makes me wonder when exactly fish was re-kingdomed as vegetable…
