breakfast: “the usual”

Friday, April 28th, 2006

This is my standard breakfast fare. A high-protein fruit smoothie that takes little time to prepare, holds me over until lunch, and is always a treat no matter how often I drink it. Here are the ingredients gathered together anxiously awaiting their turn on the merry-go-round (I mean, blender).

1/2 C homemade yogurt (the little container)
1/2 C homemade oat milk (the mason jar)
2 tsp flax oil
1 banana
1 C organic frozen blueberries
1 C organic frozen strawberries (or raspberries)
3 Tb rice protein powder (the big container)

The finished product:

curried lentils, shiitake, and squash

Actually, I used yellow split peas, cooked with onions, celery, and garlic. They are spiced up with some wonderful Indian curry spices, cumin, garam masala, and a healthy dose of red savina habanero powder(!). The butternut squash was fried in just a touch of olive oil, along with the shiitake mushrooms, giving them a beautiful caramelization and bringing out their sweetness. Finally, the dish was topped with fresh, chopped, flat leaf parsley.

homemade tempeh

My first successful batch of tempeh. This picture shows a quarter of the full 1.5 lb slab, cut into two 3 oz servings. It is much more delicious, richer, than the storebought kind!

Joining the 21st Century

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

So, I’m going to give this blogging thing a try. Why anyone would want to read about my boring day-to-day life, I have no idea! It does, however, give me an easy way to proudly display my latest culinary adventures. And maybe there are a few people, if only family and friends, who’d be interested in that.

Vegetarian food and chess are my passions. This blog will likely be heavily weighted toward the former though, as I eat every day and only catch a chess tournament every other month or so. :)
